2008 Day At the Capitol

By Kym Hopwood, VP of Legislation

CAHU Members:
Thank you to the 172, (yes, 172!!!), members who took time out of their busy schedules to attend this year's Day at the Capitol held on May 20th. This is the annual opportunity for members to meet with their local representatives to voice our views on legislation that impacts our clients and our livelihoods.

As with every legislative session, there are always many ways the government can both help and hurt our industry. Without grass roots lobbying and stories from those of us on the ground and in the trenches, many legislators are not aware of how some bills can have unintended consequences from the intent of the bill.

A great big thank you to all of our Metallic Sponsors: Anthem Blue Cross, The Word and Brown Companies and United Healthcare at Platinum level, Kaiser Permanente at Gold, LISI at Silver, and Aetna at Bronze.

In addition, United Healthcare also stepped up to sponsor the name badges, lunch and registration packets, over and above their metallic sponsorship as well as Aetna, who sponsored the table centerpieces.

And special thanks to Beere and Purves for your sponsorship of the parking for the event.

Be on the look out for Operation Drumbeats as we move into the next phase of the legislative calendar. We will be closely monitoring and hoping to amend for the better the Medical Loss Ratio bill and various changes to the individual marketplace product offerings, application changes and rescission bills.

It has been a pleasure to service as CAHU's Legislative Vice President for the past two years and I know membership will support my successor, Bill Robinson in the coming year.
